How to calculate rPE calculator

RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) is a 1-10 scale lifters use to rate how hard a set felt, where 10 means the set was taken to complete failure and lower numbers mean reps were left in the tank. This converts a weight, rep count and RPE into an estimated 1RM by first converting RPE into reps-in-reserve (RIR), then treating "reps performed plus RIR" as the effective number of reps that would have been possible to true failure.

RIR = 10 − RPE, so an RPE of 8 means 2 reps were left in reserve, and an RPE of 10 means the set was taken to failure with 0 reps in reserve. Adding RIR to the reps actually performed gives an estimate of how many reps could have been done to true failure at that weight, and that combined figure is run through the Epley formula (weight × (1 + effective reps ÷ 30)) to estimate the 1RM.

Why rPE calculator matters

Reading the result

The effective-reps figure is the "reps to failure" estimate the 1RM calculation is built on — it will always be at least as large as the reps actually performed, growing the further the set was from failure. A higher RPE (closer to 10) means less extrapolation is needed and the estimate tends to track closer to a true 1RM test; a lower RPE means more of the estimate rests on the RIR self-rating.

Where this goes wrong. RPE is inherently subjective — two lifters both calling a set "RPE 8" can be at genuinely different real distances from failure, since it depends on experience reading fatigue and honest self-assessment under load. Treat this estimate as rougher than a formula built from an actual near-max set (like the One-Rep Max Calculator above), and expect it to drift further from reality for lifters who are still learning to rate RPE consistently.

A useful check on any unfamiliar result is to compare it against a rough mental estimate first — round the inputs to convenient numbers and see whether the calculator's answer lands in roughly the same territory. A wildly different figure usually means one of the fields was entered in the wrong unit, most often a percentage typed as a whole number where a decimal was expected, or the reverse.

RIR is how many more reps could plausibly have been completed before reaching true muscular failure on that set. It is directly derived from RPE (RIR = 10 − RPE): an RPE of 10 means 0 reps in reserve (failure), while an RPE of 6 means roughly 4 reps could still have been done.

That calculator starts from a set taken close to a true near-max effort and applies one of six standard 1RM formulas directly to the actual reps performed. This one adds an extra, subjective step first — converting a self-rated RPE into reps-in-reserve — before running the same style of formula, so it carries an additional layer of estimation error on top.

The uncertainty, where it exists, is entirely in the inputs: an estimated rate or an approximate balance carries that same approximation through to the result.
