How to calculate pace calculator

Pace is the time it takes to cover a fixed unit of distance — a minute-per-kilometre or minute-per-mile figure — while speed is the distance covered in a fixed unit of time. Enter a distance and a finish time and this calculator returns both, in metric and imperial.

Total time is converted to minutes first, then divided by distance to get pace, or distance is divided by time to get speed. The two are simple reciprocals of each other once units are aligned, so pace per kilometre and speed in km/h always describe the exact same effort.

Reading the result

Pace and speed move in opposite directions: a faster runner has a lower pace number (fewer minutes per kilometre) but a higher speed number (more kilometres per hour). It is easy to glance at a smaller pace figure and assume it means "slower" — it means the opposite.

Because pace and speed are inversely related, comparing two pace times directly works fine, but comparing a pace figure to a speed figure without converting first will give a meaningless result. Always check which of the two numbers you are actually looking at before comparing sessions.
